Is there a suggested length? I am writing an essay and would like to make it just the right length to submit to magazine editors.

Submissions to magazines have guidelines on length. When a magazine accepts an article idea, they give the author(s) the length they want it to be. Depending on the magazine and the context of the article, it could be a variety of lengths.

Just write the essay. Submit the article idea to the magazine you want, and if they accept it, then they will send you thier guidelines. At that point, you may need to trim your essay, or pad it out, depending on thier needs.

Depends on the magazine.

Gossip and celebrity magazines, like People or Us, want short articles of 1 or 2 pages tops.
News magazines like Time like longer articles of several pages or more, enough to cover the topic in depth.
Research the magazine you want to submit your article to, that should give an indication of what they like.
