I would like to make a wall mounted desk, to use as a vanity. Any tips/tricks/ideas? Ideally, it would be 4 to 5 " long, 2" deep.

it's all in the brackets ( stud mounted of course )
you might want to make it 4-5' x 2' ( inches might be a bit small ) you can find existing counter tops in this size - then you just have to attach the brackets and mount ( try Home Depot or the equivalent and most vanities are only 18" ( 1 1/2 ' ) deep ( your kitchen counters are 24"-25" for a comparison - you will be too far from the mirror ) NOTE the metal brackets below look a bit tacky and flimsy you can find pre-cut wood brackets in many patterns you can even use finials made to brace and trim outside porch columns they look great and give the project a pro touch

I have successfully used premade countertop and adjustible metal brackets. The bracket standards mount to the wall studs with heavy long screws (I have used toggle bolts where studs are not an option) The sell the long bracket arms (18-20") which will support a 24" deep countertop. If you go deeper than 24" or plan on having something real heavy on the countertop, you might want to consider a 2 drawer file cabinet and one end with a spacer to get you the right height. I have also make these using regular cupboard drawer units that you can buy at any home improvement store.
