Since people always say that ignorance is what causes bigotry and racism, if you are exposed to one culture, does it necessarely mean that you're going to be more tolerant?
Or does sometimes not knowing make you more open?

Depends on the person, really. But I find exposure to other cultures makes you realize we have more in common than what separates us.It's easy to hate when you don't know the people your aiming your hate at.When you meet them on a one to one bases you learn they're just like you. They just have different traditions.
One thing I've found is that rural people(at least around where I live) tend to be less tolerant then city people.I don't mean to insult country people, most of my relatives live in rural areas.Maybe it's just because their not exposed to other cultures, beliefs, skin colours...etc.

They say travel broadens the mind. On the other hand, some
cultures are almost impossible for Westerners to understand
so it can be a little more difficult for some of us to tolerate them.

i think not knowing makes you ignorant of that culture and you won't understand their customs or the way they live.

that's why some say people are being ignorant when they are cruel or hateful to people. if they really knew the situation, they would probably change their attitude and might even be ashamed of acting the way they did.
