for me to hire only ex-convicts? i was once in prison and when i got out i got a degree and started a landscaping company. now i try to give others (ex-cons) a chance to rebuild their lives. i pay them a good wage so it's not about cheap labor. i have been criticized by some in my community for hireing these men and women. but i feel that if no one will hire them then they will become a threat to others again. so am i wrong. i have about 20 working for me now.

i had to jump through some serious legal hoops because ex- cons are not supposed to be around one another. but i did it and now the local parol officers send them my way first.

and the average wage is 10.00 an hour. so i don't see why the people in the community would give me so much flack.
no one who has worked for me has been re convicted yet.

Sweetie----Tell the community to kiss you a*s! You've made great progress with your life and for you to try to help others as well, I commend you! I hate these uppity people who think that their sh/t don't stink! There are no perfect human being on this planet and these fu*kas that feel that you're doing an injust because you're trying to help those in need----oooooh you just don't know how that pisses me off! All I can say is if you believe in your heart that you're doing something good, it makes you feel good as a person and you can sleep at night, trust me the Man above knows what's in your heart and you will be rewarded while those neighborhood hood rats will reap what they sow!

Not a chance.
Rehab is the name of the game and having someone actually want to extend a helping hand in this day and age is positively the better deed.
Criticism is cheap. You must be successful. Otherwise if you were failing they would have little to say.
What you are really giving them is respect with a step up and not a step backwards.

as a ex con myself i can tell you that we know what it means to be given a second chance.
when i got out i was only making min. wage and had to smile about it because it was the only job i could get.
ten bucks an hour is nothing to scoff at. it is more than a lot of people make who have never been to prison.

It's your business; you can do whatever you darn well please. I applaud you for giving those folks a chance when very few others might; but in your place, I'd worry about setting myself up for a fall by hiring people with a proven record of disregarding the rules and authority. Like President Reagan used to say: "Trust, but verify" that everyone's conducting themselves in a professional manner and not trying to rob you blind (tools and equipment aren't cheap, and might be fairly easy to pawn/fence)...

You're not doing nothing wrong. You are just employing the unemployable. To be brutally frank, I wouldn't employ them myself. HOWEVER, I tremendously admire you for straightening up your life. We both know that the chances of most ex cons leading productive, law abiding lives are very slim. So I truly, truly hope that your employees learn by your example and be successful themselves.
Good luck!

Good for you, man. The main thing that puts people at risk for reoffending after jail time is not having the stability that comes from a good job and a support network.

I think it is very kind of you!!!!! The biggest concern would be that they might entice each other if one happens to not be totally reformed. I think you sound very kind hearted, we all need someone to give us a second chance in life sometimes!

As long as they don't harm others. Sure. Give them a second chance.

To hire only one kind of person and not be some sort of specialized trainer sounds like discrimination.
