No. Computers now actually wear out quicker when power downed and rebooted. This is due to all the hard drive use it takes.
Go to your control panel Start>control panel and click on Power. Set your computer to always on. The operating system will take care of the rest.

No, it won't cause any harm but you will need to occasionally reboot to clear the RAM. Computers seem to get confused when they're running w/nothing to do so you'll have the occasional freeze up/ctrl+alt+del situation that everyone hates. Other than that you can expect just a little extra dust circulation on the inside due to the cooling fan running all the time. I leave all of mine running 24/7 and just reboot when necessary. As far as wasting electricity you can count on using about 12 cent a month to power a computer full time. Your hard drive might go out in about five years of running constantly but by then it will be obsolete so it really won't matter that much.

Mine is been running for 2 years straight (24x7) now. I only reboot the system when is needed such installing a new software or intermitent hanging. So far, my systems are working fine. Ofcourse, the monitor automatically turns off when idle for an hour. Just like all IT department, their systems run and utulize CPU with ridiculous usage and leave it running through out the year. Most PC is designed to withstand many hours of usage so don't worry about it. You're only concern is your electric bill. and to answer your question, no it won't hurt computer. Above me doesn't know anything so don't listen to him, he looks wise but I guess he is not.

There are 2 trains of thought to this question:
Leaving it on is bad because the constant electricity wears the circuits, fans, motors, disk drive out, besides everything having a life expectancy in # of hours.
Constantly turning it on and off means alot of cold boots which put more stress and wear and tear on the circuits, fans, motors, disk drives, which wears more when going from stop to start to stop as opposed to continuously running.
In college I worked for the IT department and saw PCs broken that were left on all the time and some that were constantly being turned on and off. Other than the high electric bill for leaving it on all the time, I'm not sure there's a "right" answer to this question, just a personal preference with the power-down modes that PCs go into after being left alone for awhile.

There's a lot of argument on this subject. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. A lot of people swear by leaving it on because it supposedly doesn't do nearly as much damage as turning it on and off every day. However I tend to go with the contrary. I turn my computer on every morning and off every evening, and it has lasted longer than my mother's computer which she bought around the same time. She leaves hers on all the time. Her hard drive got fried the other day, and here mine is still as good as its ever been *knock on wood*. I think a lot of it has to do with brand, too. I have a Dell, and she has an e-Machine (made by Gateway). I've had Compaqs in the past, and this Dell has also lasted longer than they did combined.

It's generally not advised to leave your computer switched on for these lengths of time for several reasons:
1. It simply wastes electricity and costs you more money
2. If you leave your monitor switched on it can cause the imagine to become 'burned' onto the screen
3. If you have Broadband Internet and have a usage limit from your ISP, then leaving your computer on could cause you to hit your usage limit
4. Unless your computer is in an extremely well ventilated area it is possible that leaving your computer on for unecesary lengths of time could cause it to overheat
It's your call at the end of the day but for the trouble of turning it on and off then it's probably more logical to turn it off whilst your sleeping and out of the house.

No it won't, unless your desktop/laptop has overheating problems. My computer acts as a TV server and has been running for about 3-4 years now without any problems. If your computer starts freezing up when you leave it on, you'll have your answer.

It can cause wear n tear which means a shorter life span for your hardware, unless you do this:
Right click on desktop -> Properties -> Screen Saver-> Power
I would set your "Turn off monitor" between 30 mins and 1 hour
Set your turn off hard-disks to "2-4 hours"
That should prolong the life of your hardware!
goood luck

not unless your computer overheats or is not in a good ventilation area. Our computer is on all the time unless we are going away for a long time or during thunderstorms
