Technically, there have been 43 presidents of the UNITED States. Some would argue however, that since Jefferson Davis was President of the Confederate States during the Civil War (1861-1865), there have actually been 44.

There have been two Presidents with the surname Bush, and to differentiate between them, the first ,George Herbert Walker Bush, is called "Bush 41", and his son, George Walker Bush as "Bush 43". Since George Walker Bush (43), is the current President I would assume that there have been 43 presidents of the United States.
