Should the long term (more than 6 months) unemployed who are fit to work be forced to do jobs that no-one else likes in exchange for their benefits?
Jobs would include things like sorting out rubbish for recycling or cleaning the streets of dog mess.
It would encourage them to start working to get better pay and conditions elsewhere.

I think this sort of work is better for Community Service. People who are unemployed should have the chance to find a job suited to their skills, otherwise they're not going to stick at it. There needs to be more investment in training etc.

How about giving those sort of jobs to prisoners or those on community service, not everyone who is unemployed is work shy, some of them through no fault of their own, age, lack of skills or the redundant just cannot find a job, the company my husband works for has just this last fortnight taken on 250 people from Poland, lots of the people at his firm wanted those jobs for their family members, friends, relatives or neighbours, but no, the English are not what they are looking for these days, why, because the ones already working at his firm are on a pretty good wage, the poor unfortunate Polish are getting the minimum wage for doing the same work and companies are getting away with it, his company will not take anyone over 30 anymore either, so what chance does anyone in the job centre queue have in our town when firms like the one my husband works for are both racist and ageist.

I do believe in workfare, and in some areas community service is required in order to receive benefits like subsidized housing.

why do people assume that because someone isn't working they automatically have the right to dictate what the unemployed person should do?

our society has a sick obsession with work, it shows up how weak we are that we can put work above leisure.

Yes, but unfortunately most people on welfare want more benefits and no work even though they say they want to work. To many freeloaders today.
