It shouldn't do anything except maybe roll forward. But I still wouldn;t try and start it like that. Make sure you shift it into neutral or park before trying to start the engine again.

It won't start until you shift into Park or Neutral.
I'd recommend against doing it, but I've done it in my [mid-80s Ford] quite a bit and have never had any transmission problems. From what farmers around here tell me, it's kinda SOP to put a manual transmission into gear when you set the emergency brake to leave the car, just in case.

Your transmission won't be locked in park. Although I don't think it will be free rolling, like it would be in neutral, it may take off rolling, if it's on a hill.
Also, most cars won't start unless you're in park of neutral.
Why do you want to do this? Your car has park for a reason, why would you choose to not use it?

You can do that, but in late model cars, you will not be able to place the gear in park, or extract the key.
In older cars, it would roll on the least grade.

No problems except the car could roll away.

well if you have a manual transmission you have to leave it in gear when you turn if off. I dont think that it would hurt your car to be in drive when you turn it off...but it may roll

Nothing will happen. You just can't lock the ignition unless it's in park. But nothing will happen shutting it off in gear.

most new cars don't let you take the key out if it's still in drive.
trust me, I've been dumb enough to do it by accident a number of times.
