Hi-My computer was struck by lightning. The CD-R, Memory, and Hard drive all still work because I tried them in another computer. (I have now put them back into the one that was hit by lightning)

When I plug in the computer and try to turn it on, nothing happens. Is there a relatively easy (and inexpensive) way to fix the problem. What would I have to buy? A whole new motherboard? Is there any way I could just buy a new power supply in the CPU. I know this isn't alot to go by, but any help will be appreciated.

Hard to say. I had a computer that was damaged in a lightning storm and would not start up. It turned out to be a fried internal modem (the computer was actually unplugged at the time, but the phone line was still connected). It was repaired under warranty by the manufacturer.

There is no way of telling what is wrong without testing the hardware. If you are skilled enough to do that yourself, you probably would not be posting your question here 8-)

If NOTHING happens when you turn it on (I mean no lights or sound) then it is probably the power supply. Not sure if it has a fuse or breaker, but replacing that would be the first step. Otherwise, you probably have to bite the bullet and call a professional (sorry).

Really nothing, no lights at all, is the power supply. They are $50-75 bucks and not hard to replace. Take the one you have out, it is usually only 4 screws and a bunch of plugs. Remember what you unplug because you plug the new one in the same way. Take it to the store with you and get one just like it.

The problem with lightning is that you don't know what else. The motherboard might be OK and it might not. The CPU might be OK and it might not. The only way to tell is to start replacing things and see. But if there are no lights, you need a power supply.

P.S. if it damaged anything else and you have homeowners insurance you may be covered. I would check. If it didn't get anything else it probably won't make your deductible.

Hello , I believe I can help as I had this happen to me also along with a few other damaged electrical appliances . Fortunately it was an inexpensive fix and my computer just needed a new modem that was destroyed by the lightning strike which traveled to the computer via a line strike outside . It was about three years ago and a Compaq presario computer and installed it cost me 48 dollars. It was a much cheaper fix going to a small private computer shop than taking it to best buy or a major brand store which sells computers so I would advise against that . For instance best buy wanted over 91 dollars for the modem along not including installation and tax , the local computer shop fixed it out the door for 48 bucks.

we have the same thing in mind I would try a new power supply 1st... why not get the power supply out of the one you tried the cd, memory & hard drive 1st, fix it in this one that has been struck by lightning see if it works.........

If the power supply fails then I would take it to a an engineer so he can check if the motherboard needs to be purchased.......

I would start by buying and installing a new power supply. If it fires up and seems to work, go for it, but you have a good chance of developing problems later. the lightening strike may not have fried out your other electrical component, but it most certainly weakened them if the power supply stayed up long enough to keep the circuit open. I would strongly suggest getting a new computer and transferring your hard drive and CD drive into it.

If the whole pc is lifeless you have to be able to retrieve some files out of your complicated stress once you get a clean pc. you could opt to come across a specialist to finish that. even as the computer change into 'struck' change into it a right away hit or change into is a plausible surge that got here with the help of the electric powered socket? If the latter i'd recommend a surge protector next time round.

If it were struck by a lightning surge – none of your hard drives would work.

Try a service shop for changing the power supply – or buy a new system.

even if your HDD or CD drive is disconnected from mother board ,
By plugging in the power supply and switching it on, they should atleast whirr /spin , blink lights..
( dont seal off the CPU box.. keep it open and watch)
If it does not , get the power supply as it is hit,

After plugging in the powersupply, repeat the procedure..
then commect to Mother board and try the rest of the components.....

If it was struck by lightning then the chances are slim.
Most probably it was a power surge, either through the power ciruit or through the Tel lines.

In any case, if you need advise regarding power protection equip send me a mail.

If you buy another motherboard, your operating system may not work with the new one. Try a new power supply first.
