Classic rock is often defined by FM radio stations as:

Led Zeppelin
AC/DC
Boston
Bad Company
Eagles
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Allman Brothers

and the like. Nothing wrong with those bands, but you can quickly learn about them just by listening to the radio.

Some other interesting artists and bands you might want to dig up, that don't make it on the radio that often, might include (in no particular order):

Peter Gabriel
Badfinger
Marshall Crenshaw
Elvis Costello
Joe Jackson
UK
Yes
Gary Moore
Thin Lizzy
Eric Johnson
Joe Satriani
Talk Talk
Happy the Man

There is way too many to choose from. Try: Metallica, Ozzy, Aerosmith, Queen, AC/DC, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, etc. If you have satellite radio, there is a station just for Classic Rock, it's great.
