I put a new SATA hard disk and computer won´t start. My power supply is 420W and I have connected a DVD-ROM and a CD-ROM and an IDE hard drive. So, I think that there should be enough power supplied by the power supply. Disconnecting power to the SATA drive and computer starts beautifully.

Unhook the SATA drive and boot into Windows and download SpeedFan. It will tell you your voltages. If any are low, you will probably need a new power supply. A good 350W power supply will probably do better than a very cheap 480W power supply.

Unless your power supply is utter crap.. i doubt one single Sata hard drive would need so much power that a 420w supply couldnt power your system.. anythings possible.. but unlikely.
Just a quick check ..if your power supply has a sata power adapter, you didnt plug that and a 4 pin molex plug into the harddrive did you? Is this a new build? has the computer worked with other harddrives before?
When you say the computer wont start is it totally dead or does it atleast post? Is the motherboard Sata 1.5 and the harddrive is a Sata 3.0 and you need to jumper the harddrive to Sata 1.5 mode?
Do you have the cables from the case to the motherboard like reset ,hdd activity, and so on connected properly?

Well i thought i'd just give ya a basic idea for trouble shooting if you have access to another power supply or harddrive it would make it alot easier.. because your power supply may be fine and it's just a bad harddrive. I've had a few in my day that were bad from day one.
Anyway good luck.
