West Palm Beach is very nice. I live in Miami and it's not a very cool place to live. over 70% of the population speaks spanish and of those, probably 40% can't speak english. The beaches are only a couple of hours away.
If you really want to live in Miami, I would say to look at Kendall, Coral Gables and Miami Beach. All but Kendall are pretty expensive, but they are all nice.
If you don't mind living in an apartment, find one near the beach.

All I can tell you is that if you are considering Miami as an option...you will feel like you are in South America. Not to many people from up north over here.
it is a city that has a night life in South Beach but be prepared to pay expensive cover.
Also no major concert or cultural events happen here...unless it is a popular south american artist.
No for transportation...you will need a car! Public transportation sucks!

Fort Myers is close to the beach. Not a huge town, but lots of night life. Orlando is quite a ways from the beach but has lots of crime... if you like NYC, you'll be right at home.

If you like crowds, hot weather, frenzied night-life and great beaches, try Miami or Miami Beach. Spanish is helpful but not required.

South Beach always reminded me of NYC. Many of the people who live there come from NYC.

I can't stand Orlando - although there are lots of nice people there, there are also lots of low-life's and most of it, other than downtown, is just urban sprawl - strip development with no urban planning.
Much of the west coast is geriatric. Parts of Tampa are nice.
But for what you're seeking - only one place, Miami
