If a defednat brings up mediation, often it because they want to settle. They will try to make a rediculous offer and unlerr you and your attorny stand firm- the real offer will never arise. I could tell you stories.

Insurance companies usually have specific numbers in mind, and the attorney on the opposite side (or the party, if they are very brave and/or foolish) can negotiate directly without needing a mediator.

Mediation is a process that is most useful when both parties want to reach a settlement, but don't know how to break the impasse. The role of the mediator is to help the parties get passed the emotional blocks and focus on actually resolving the underlying issues. When it comes to insurance settlements, there usually aren't anything except legal games (which most mediators won't play) and the underlying facts to address. So, mediation doesn't usually add anything to the process in such situations.
