My MIL is a nurse, and she re-uses and recycles ALOT of stuff. Hospitals throw out so much stuff! I understand their perspective, but if you look around, you can find alot of things to use for yourself, friends, local schools, etc.

You may also get in touch w/ world wide health ministries. Things like topical ointments that expire in the US, may still serve some purpose overseas. You can reduce pollution in the US, and provide needed materials abroad.

You can also encourage your patients to live well and healthy. Bike or walk instead of drive short distances...eat home-grown vegetables, etc.

The only way i have heard it used in nursing is in reference to the nursing shortage. They are encouraging nursing schools to reach out to foreign students and they are trying to attract nurses around the world to come to America to practice locally.
