Kawasaki KLR250's were ridden by forward observers during Desert Storm. Harley also manufactured an off-road motorcycle for the military that used a Rotax 650 single, but the Pentagon decided to go with the Kawasaki KLR650, modified by Hayes Diversified Technologies to run on diesel fuel.

My papaw told me he rode a Harley with a suicide shifter in germany right after WWII was over. He was in the Army.
