Banned books week is coming up and my coworker and I were selected to make a display in the library about it. The ALA's theme this year is circus-y, so based on that - help me brainstorm some ideas for a display we can put on the wall for all the patrons to see! :)

This is a stolen idea as I saw it half price books once, but it was really well done. They had this row of bars sitting on black and white striped cloth with the books behind the bars (which appeared to be an old crib side painted silver really) with chains laying around and a sign that said, "Imprisoned Ideas".

I like the cage idea...like they are being kept away from you for your safety...like wild animals. You could have circus type posters saying phrases like death defying and dangerous ideas. That's hard because circus theme seems fun and kind of playful and I think of banned books as a very serious subject.

How about a large picture of a child's head with literary growth and imagination written in his hair. Then a huge circle with the slash painted over him with banned books written in the slash. Then underneath, you could have a book shelf with some of the banned books on it and have it chained and padlocked. could be real books or painted or drawn. Or you could have it in reverse with the books having the circle with the slash and the child's head . chained and locked. That might be even more effective. Being a circus them you could have the circle and slash be of fire. and the child in clown face.

People "throwing" books at circus lions. The books could be held up by wire and look like they were actually being thrown.
