I just got back from my first doctor's appointment with my first pregnancy. Based on my period I am 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. My doctor did a vaginal ultrasound but could not see ANYTHING in my uterus. What could this mean???

Let's rephrase, the doctor can't even see a sac in my uterus. No sign of ANYTHING.

They couldn't detect my baby till I was 7 weeks pregnant, even with a vaginal ultrasound. So don't take it too hard. Even when the doctor finds it, it's no larger than a pea. But it's very exciting because you can see the little heart going to work. Make sure to take your vitamins, eat healthy, and make routine doctors visits, and i'm sure you'll be seeing your chid in no time.
CONGRATULATIONS!

I was about three months pregnant. We went in to have an ultrasound. My soon-to-be husband drove an hour so that he could be there... so we could see our baby for the first time. I laid on the table and the vaginal ultrasound started. The doctor poked and prodded and found nothing. He kept poking and prodding. Nothing.

It felt like it lasted an hour, I swear. I was sure that I was pregnant, we'd been hearing the heartbeat and everything. By the end of that exam, I was squeezing my man's hand so hard I was surprised that it wasn't broken. I was crying and not looking at the screen because I didn't want to see an empty sack.

Nothing.

The next day we went to another office and saw a maternal/ fetal specialist. I had my hear turned away because I didn't want to see nothing again.

He found the baby immediately. She was dancing around and had a strong heartbeat. It was the most absolutely beautiful site I'd ever seen.

At 5 1/2 weeks, a baby will be about the size of a grain of rice. That may be difficult to see with an office ultrasound machine (or even with a fancier one).

Wait. Be hopeful. In a week or two, go back and have another. Right now, I wouldn't worry too much. Try to think good thoughts.

Good luck.

ps... our daughter is 8 months old now and still a dancing machine!

5 1/2 weeks is actually 31/2 weeks. Your first weeks is your period and the second weeks is your ovulation time, so for 3 weeks I would not worry about it, that is why they don't do ultrasounds in my clinic until you are 19 weeks pregnant or you have had any problems before 19 weeks. I would not worry about it, your baby is not much yet it is still a cell dividing. At about 8 weeks is when you will see a sack. Relax, everything will be ok. When I was 11 weeks pregnant I had an appointment to hear the babie's hear beat.....we couldn't hear it.....I panicked!!! they told me to go back in 2 more weeks, at 13 weeks I was so nervous because I have heard of people hearing the baby's hear beat at 8 or 10 weeks, so we did hear the baby at 13 weeks.....and I was stressed out for 2 weeks for nothing! so the best you can do right now is to relax. Take care of yourself and your baby, eat healthy, and rest, sleep all you can and take your vitamins.

At 5 and a half weeks, im not surprised that nothing was picked up immediately. Your baby is around the size of a pea, or even smaller. Sometimes an ultrasound at this early stage wouldnt pick this up. When you go for you 10 - 12 week scan, hopefully you should have something pleasant to look at!

It is normal to see an embrionic sac by 5.5 weeks, but it doesn't always happen. I think his concern is that you have only had a chemical pregnancy that never implanted or that you have miscarried.

It may mean that your endometrial lining could be thicker than normal, it may mean that your doctor isn't a very good ultrasound technician or that you aren't as far along as you think. Try to relax and just wait until you are 8 weeks before you go back.

With a vaginal ultrasound it's almost impossible to see anything at 5 weeks. They should be able to see something at 10 weeks but usually not too much before that.

You may need to go back...you may not be as far along as you think...I had my first vaginal u/s at 5 weeks and I saw a sac anD a beating heart. They may just not have seen it yet...at 5-1/2 weeks its really only 3-1/2 weeks...I'm sure that they will do it again in a week or so...just to calm your fears.

most of the times they do pelvic ultrasounds because the uterus is tilted and its hard to see.
I had the same thing happen to me. They couldnt see until i was 7 weeks. My had a tilted uterus.

I don't think that you would be able to see anything that early. I am suppose to have an ultasound at 9 weeks and the doctor told me the baby would be very very small. I'm sure it is normal.
