Well, according to BetterSleep.Org, the difference is 4" -- in 2 different directions!! And not what you'd expect on 1 of them.

King 76" x 80"
California King 72" x 84"

So, the California King is longer by 4", but is actually *narrower* by 4", also. How odd! Maybe they are not only taller, but like to sleep closer together .

On the other hand, Spacify states:

"California King : A bed size that measures 74"x86". This style is popular on the West coast of the United States. The additional size comes in the length creating a rectangular shape rather than the square shape of a standard king (Eastern King)."

Notice the size discrepancy . Oh well, I tried!
