Sulu did...What was wrong with Checkov?

Nothing was _wrong_ with Pavel Checkov...he actually made it to the rank of First Officer on a starship. That is a pretty high rank and insinuates a long and active career. I mean, if you serve on a ship with 200 other people in real life would you expect everyone to make the same rank of captain? People would die/leave service/be happy in their job and not seek promotion..or there just may not be a ship for them to captain. It doesn't mean there's an issue with the character or person.

That last answer made no sense. Sulu was discriminated against by PROMOTING him to Captain because he was gay and holding the aparrently straight Chekov back was a favor. In the first scripting of Wrath of Khan, Chekov was the Captian of the Reliant, but it was changed in later draft versions. Secondly, Chekov did achieve Commander Rank in the Star Trek New Voyages episodes in which Walter Koenig did reprise his role of Chekov. Not a bad ranking, considering, based on the original series, some commanders have been seen to command Starbases and Starships and to outrank Captains at times.

It didnt fit the story. Sulu's promotion worked with story. Having both promoted to captain and then having to find ways to work both into the plot would have been to difficult.

Actully, i think its b/c he was russian and VERY russian.
Remember, the cold war didnt end all that long ago. A pro russian captian, although not making a diffrence in the Star Trek world, might have upset people in the real world.

Why?
I'll tell you why!
Because those officers at Star Fleet can't spell, that's why.

Every time he went there to get promotion they would say "Hello Mr Fuckov" and he did.
