Its an old chestnut, but the Champions league was borne out of the fact that some of the richest clubs in Europe were threatening to form a breakaway league, in order to keep more money for themselves. The Champions League is a compromise to keep them happy, whilst trying to keep the competition as a credible European Cup. It is purely a way of more or less guaranteeing that the richest clubs get at least 6 European games a season.

Well it would be short competition with 8 teams, what's strange is Chelsea have been champions for the last 2 seasons and Man utd, Arsenal and Liverpool have seeded above them, Is it the champions league or the league of previous champions ?
A few years ago there was talk of an international league between the big clubs of Europe,I guess this is the compromise.
Well the bottom line is MONEY !!

in the uk we traditionally called it the european cup, but it was always referred to by eufa as the champions cup. by increasing the number of teams, and introducing a league format for the group games, they changed it but kept it simple.
The champs league has vastly improved in quality since the old days of the "european cup", back then with only one good team from the big leagues, and a straight knock out format, some dross got through to latter stages, especially when the team from the big countries came up against each other in early stages.

It's like the World Series of baseball - only US teams. It's to make it seem more important than it is
