AA

The obvious answer would be to say AA. But I would say there a circumstances in which I would like to see different cards.

Imagine the scenario, you're in a high stakes game where the blinds are £100-£200, it's getting late, people are chasing cards and hardly anyone is passing pre flop. Most players round the table have in excess of £30,000 in front of them.

If you raise pre flop with aces and mostly everyone calls it you are not a strong favourite. You don't even know where you stand once the flop comes down. You could bet and take down a comparatively small pot. Or you could run into someone with a monster who could put a large dent in your bankroll.

What I propose in games like these are cards like 10-J suited. This particular had can make 4 nut straights not to mention flushes, full house etc. Ok it's not the best pre flop, but I hope I've made you realise that there are many situations in poker and it's not all about getting aces.

Well it's always nice to see pocket rockets (two aces) but the quality of what you have in hand is entirely dependent on what comes out in the flop. You could have a pair of twos, which doesn't sound like much until 2 more show up. You could have a 4 and a 6 and then the flop turns up a 3,5 and 7. There really isn't an "ideal" pair to start off with.

Isn't this the best game ever invented??

a pocket pair of aces is the obvious, but also on percentages the proven best hand. You have a 0% chance of an overcard coming on the flop, turn or river whereas with a pair of K's there is a 22% chance of an ace showing up in the flop. There are 19,600 flop combinations from the 50 cards you cannot see. AA's still get beat loads because if someone has another pocket pair, there are reasonable odds they may get 3 of a kind, or full house etc etc.

Depends on what the previous flops have been. Usually the worse two cards to have are AA, heck any pair is usually not a good thing unless your pretty sure that another is gonna be on the flop. I usually prefer things like KQ, 76, etc etc ... have a better chance of making a straight or getting a full house.

A A. Also called "Pocket Rockets" or "American Airlines". This is absolutely the best starting poker hand before the flop.

I think 2 Aces are the best 2 cards!

I would say 2 aces. Any high pair, or an ace and a picture card.
It always gives me confidence, and even if the flop is not good, i probably would bet big, or go all in!
