I always ask them to coffee or lunch or a shared event.
Toast masters is a great group to meet people. You talk to each other as part of the event.

FIND a "commonality" wherein the both of you share an interest. In dating, ANYTHING counts. If you cannot easily find a shared interest, GO OFF THE WALL and make one up! - This should impress her by your individuality.
