It depends of what kind of atom you split.
"However, in 1917 Rutherford and his technician, William Kay, set up an experiment using alpha particles as projectiles with which to hit nitrogen atoms. In a long series of exhausting tests, they showed that the result was the liberation of the nucleus of a hydrogen atom. Rutherford had achieved the transmutation of one element into another. Surprisingly, there was very little interest in either the scientific or popular press when he published his results in 1919."

Basically, a transmutation of elements takes place.
But don't try this at home, with, say, a uranium atom.

Imagine that the nucleus of a an atom is an elastic ball and you add energy to that ball (this could be done by shooting it with a neutron). Then that ball is going to deform a little, but elastic forces are going to try to restore that ball to its original shape. The result on these forces is that the nucleus is going to start to oscillate between two shapes. One is a spherical ball and the other is kind of like a peanut. If you give the nucleus enough energy eventually the elastic forces will not be strong enough to pull the peanut back to a spherical shape and the two half's of the peanut will split. This is how atoms split, but the "elastic" force is really the strong nuclear force.

lol. You get an explosion if you split one, but I think further research needs to be done on the spitting of atoms.

You drool on yourself...

If you mean split an atom, you get a massive release of energy. The energy released comes from the energy bonding the protons, electrons, and neutrons.
