Guppioes are extremely hardy fish, and can live in regular tap water with a filter and bubbler. the female is pregnant for about 20 days, and you can tell when she is due because the back of her abdomen becomes almost black. They are extremely prolific. I bought 2 guppies 18 months ago, and now have over 100, and I don't put the female in breeding box, but just skim the live fry off the top of the tank. Its best to kep some floating plants in the tank so the babies can hide there, since the parents are going to try to eat all of them. A litter can be upwards of 30 or 40 fry, so you really don't want to save them all unless you are planning to breed them for show. Then you will need more tanks. its also best to get 2 females for every male, since the male will bother the female to breed almost constantly and she won't have a chance to eat. if you wnat to hae more fish, I suggest getting another small tank to put the babies into until they are too big for the parents to eat( about 3 months)

Guppy can live in salt water or fresh water. Salt is helpful as some diseases like ick, velvet, some fungus, and bacterial infections don't like it. (It will not make them healthier, but it might ward off disease.) The function of aquarium salt is to get you to pay way to much money for salt. Table salt works fine, or you can get kosher salt without anti-caking agents. Note that people whine about iodine don't realize that most aquarium salt contains more iodine! (Plus iodine is good for fish too.)

Guppy can take massive amounts of salt if you increase the amount of salt slowly. I recommend 1 teaspoon per gallon by add 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons per days for 5 days. Be sure to dissolve the salt into a cup of tank water.

Note that this amount of salt it bad for most fish other than guppy, platty, molly, and swordtail fish. If you plan on having fish other than this only do 1 per 5 gallons. Also if you buy a new guppy float it's bag in the tank for 3 minutes. Then pour out 1/3 of the water, and pour in some tank water. Repeat 2 more times over the next 10 minutes.

As long as you have a male and a female, they should reproduce without much of anything needing to be done on your part. The trouble is that they eat their young. However, their gestation period is only about 3 days, which means they can have several broods in a month. Every time I have had guppies, I have found that after a while it is as though they have so many babies they simply cannot eat them all, and they will start to survive. After a while, your tank will be overrun with guppies as they will start inbreeding, and you will have literally hundreds of baby guppies. When my tank gets to that point I usually buy another breed of fish that is a little more aggressive to help keep the population down, but they will sometimes beat up the adult fish as well.

I started with two guppys eight months ago I now have well over a thousand a week maybe two for reproduction. A little salt is good in the tank not to much though. Also It is very good to use purified water in the fish tanks, there will be no hard water stains and I havent had a fish die in two years since beginning to use purified water. Before when I was using tap water I was losing them left and right very distressing. Hope this helps, also never get the small snails you will never get rid of them and they kill any and all plants that you have in your tank.

Just a small amount of salt is OK. Get yourself a breeding tank. It's just a little plastic box that floats in your tank with a opening to a second level so when she gives birth the babies are separated from the male. He will eat his babies. It normally takes a month or two for them to mate and have babies. I would suggest getting a few females.

Your guppies do not need salt in their water because they are not saltwater fish. It takes about 16 days for them to have little ones and you will notice the female will have a fat belly and it will look kind of black when she is pregant. They will eat their own babies so you need to have a place for the babies to hide such as a lot of vegetation which can be fake on the bottom of the aquarium or put them in another bowl as soon as they are born. THey will be really tiny and you will not hardly notice them unless you are paying close attention to your aquarium and fish. Good Luck
