Many people interpert this as going onto the afterlife. JRR Tolkin never actually said that that is what happened. The elves are leaving the land of middle earth and going somewhere across the sea. Because this is so cryptic and unexplained as to where exactly they are going, people like to think of it as going to heaven. But in reality it would be the Heaven for the elves, beacuse only they, or people they bring with them can go there. It is really open to the reader, or in this case, audience member to find their own meaning in Them leaving upon a white boat.

The boat takes the last of the Elves and those selected mortals on their last trip to the 'Grey Havens'. A place hidden from Middle Earth by the Valar (gods) where all immortals live. Those mortals chosen to go there experience something like death and can never return to middle earth.

If you've read the books, the getting on the boat is symbolic of passing on to the afterlife where there's no more suffering.

The boat was on its way to Heaven. For the souls. Frodo's time was done. He would no longer remain among the living.

That sounds more like a statement instead a question.
