no just the icon, if it's a shortcut (you can tell shortcuts by the little arrow in the bottom left corner).
If it's an actual file or program, then yes, it'll go to the recycle bin. But to properly remove a program, it's best to go to add/remove programs in the control panel or use the uninstall utility that came with the program.

99% of programs listed in the start menu or on the desktop are shortcuts. The exceptions are files that you may put there manually. There are actual system folders that are usually hidden that contain the actual file shortcuts.
If you go to "my computer/local disk/program files" you will see where most programs are actually stored.

No. The icon is like a 'placeholder' that points to the file, but it does NOTHING to the file.
To get rid of the file, delete it and then empty the recycle bin.

No if you delete the icon thats it you have to go to your control panel and go to add/remove program to delete the whole thing

if it is a shortcut to the file all you are deleting is the shortcut.
if it is the actual file then yes you are,
you can tell them apart because a shortcut has a small upwards pointing arrow on it.

no that only deletes the shortcut. to uninstall the file, you have to go to My Computer, then click Add/Delete Programs.
