A reflector behind the candle will reflect the light in the direction you want it to go. Depending on the reflector, this can add a surprising amount to the intensity of the light. You can also put a lens in front of the flame to focus it on a certain point. The light will be quite intense at that point.

Use a parabolic mirror. Look inside a flashlight. It has a light source and a parabolic reflector behind it to focus the light. They use this design for a reason. By moving it, you can focus it where you want. Just don't burn it.
