I'm not talking about the USB specification for computers or devices, or the connctors for that matter. What I want to know is if I purchase a USB 2.0 device, and I use my old USB cable? Is "USB 2.0 Compliant" in reference to a cable merely a marketing gimmic, or is there really a difference?

USB 2.0 is significantly faster than the prior version. Cables labeled 2.0 compliant are certified to support the higher speeds. Older cables will still work, but may not reach top speeds for 2.0 (which you may not notice anyway). You can find more info than you'd ever want to know on USB at the link below.

The ending results will be that your equipment will operate at the older USB cable setting. first there was USB 1.1 and then there was USB 2.0. USB 2.0 compliant Peripherals and equipment gerally work faster with a USB 2.0 cable nut slows down to operate at the older cable's operating speeds

Electrons don't care about how big the cable is as long as it conducts well. 1394, RCA, HDMI...a cable is a cable if it goes from A to B and isn't broken or susceptible to interference. 1394 was so fast once it's called "firewire" but it's actually slower than USB 2. One thing you should consider is possibly not having the connection set up properly. Check your System Properties for improperly installed devices and correct them. 1394 is still a reliable and durable connection, despite it's age and digital to digital is preferable to converting analog to digital.
