some of these are explicit and i am worried that my children will see them. why is this happening? please help

normally if for example you are opening them from an email you have received they use a temp folder so you can view them. The other pictures you are seeing are temp images others have used on your computer to do the same thing so someone in your house is downloading or receiving filth.
To get rid of it all, make sure you go to start - programmes - accessories - system tools - disk cleanup and set it running to clear out everything which will delete said pictures. However i would start asking some of the others who use your computer who's getting it first!

These images are stored on your hard drive, possibly in 'my documents/my pictures'. Take a look there and delete.
If they are not in that folder then when you arrow to one of these images right click it and click properties to see where it is stored.
Someone is downloading them....who can it be??

They are pictures stored in your temporary internet folder from websites that were visited by somebody using your computer. Somebody's been surfing.
Clear your temporary internet files under "Tools" / "Internet Options" / "Delete Files"
