they just freeze them off these days, if you see your GP s/he will arrange this. When I was a kid I used to have to lye on the floor whilst my father hacked away at it with a stanley knife!

Try sticking duct/duck tape on your foot over the verruca. Change the tape every few hours and it'll take a couple of days.
Mad as it might sound, I know several people who have tried this - and it did actually work!

bazuka does actually work really well, and is much cheaper and easier than chiropodist treatments. it solidifies over the veruca so you don't have to keep redoing it and it doesn't rub off in your shoes. it also prevents t spreading to other people so you can still go swimming
