I know that we all are effected by decisions that the government makes. I am just curious about specifics on how certain decisions have effected you? You pick the decision, I am really looking for any TRUE example....ie. The war has effected me ______. or tax cuts/raises......etc.......you get the point.

While technically we have a voice, look at what happened in our presidential election. Bush never should have been reelected, but then he never should have been elected in the first place, and half America agreed, yet, what good did our voice do?

Okay specifics, let's see, child abuse. I was not an abused child and I turned out just fine. Yet due advocacy laws, I can't raise my children the way I was raised without turning heads and possibly risking jail time. I am not free to be a parent. The government tells me how to parent. It affects EVERYONE in America. why? Because we have become a micro managed society, unable to act on our own without uncle Sam's approval. Many parents don't parent at all as a result, and because of that, in many parts of this country it's not safe in your house let alone on the street.

The war has affected me and my family directly as a friend of the family has been injured in Iraq.

Social Security affects me directly because I am demanded to pay to support others while being told that the funds will run dry before I retire. Does anyone believe we will ever see the money being stolen from us by our government?

Abortion-Put an end to the issue once and for all. My body is my choice to do with. What grows in it, or doesn't is up to me. The day the rich and the politicians are willing to pay women child support is the day they have a right to tell that women what to do with that baby. It affects all women whether or not you think it does. What about when you realize your child will be severely crippled. You have a chance to abort it in the womb but can't and you end up with your child taken away and you living in a cardboard box broke from the medical care, because nobody cares what happens to you. What about the women who could die trying to carry a child to term but can't abort it? Or me, who was told she could never have children, mine was a miracle but what about someone else? maybe for them it's not. Abortion is not a black or white issue, you can't abolish abortion without putting countless lives at stake.

Helmet laws, I never wore a helmet as a child, they didn't really exist, no one had them, why should I be forced to wear one? Why should I make my own kid?

expense accounts of elected officials. My taxes being spent on office chairs that cost more than my dining room in its entirety. Desks made of better quality than anything I can afford to put in my house. This affects me because if greedy politicians used plastic file organizers instead of oak, metal chairs with cushions like my workplace that cost all of $40 each, cubicles instead of desks, Children's artwork instead of priceless masterpieces, etc, etc. If they flew economy like everyone else instead of first class. They work for us, but don't do anything to better our lives, don't increase wages to a living wage, they don't care if I have affordable healthcare, etc, etc. The point is why should they be treated to stellar expenses because we voted them in? They work for us but they don't so why should they be allowed to benefit from doing opposite of what they were elected to do? It affects me and it affects you, smaller expenses, less tax.

My god I could go on for hours....

I know what you mean. But I would argue that we all have a right to voice our opinion on how our society should operate.

Very few laws affect me directly. Child abuse laws don't affect me since I'm not a child, or an abuser.

But I still have a strong opinion on the matter.

The phrase "not in my name" has been used. whether it's same-sex marriage, the Iraq war, etc., people in our country have a right (and a duty) as citizens to speak up and participate.

We "run" the government, through our elected representatives. So we have to make decisions.

Who else is better qualified?

Nothing effects me in that I don't really care that much. I know the political system, I'm relatively well versed in economics and I normally know what's coming next and why. War, obviously is bad but, my marching in the street wont change it. Poverty, obviously is bad but, my giving a beggar some money wont change it.
All anyone can hope to do is put over the arguments for alternatives, plant a seed, plant a thought, if it is viable it will flourish and before too long you will overhear people using your argument.
Their decisions don't affect me at all. When they come out with one I don't understand, then I'll be worried.

sorry this is just a comment on what others have said....do you not pay attention the biggest cause of support for al qaida or any other terrorist organization is the war in Iraq/Afghanistan it has been proven that the more we attack them the stronger they get the leader of al qaida came on tv and said thank you Mr. bush for the war I have never had so many recruits so many donations and so much support as I have since you attacked....so get your facts straight some group of stupid liberals praising Muslims or whatever did NOTHING to help the terrorist look at the historical facts ppl the terrorist didn't even care about America until AFTER we started attacking there countries beliefs and way of life and im not talking about anything recent back in the 50's is when we started pissing them off whether it be through supporting there enemies or sending money and arms to there enemies one way or another we brought a lot of the hatred on our selves .....Now back to the question asked in the first place the Patriot Act (horribly named law) has affected me and friends of mine we have been opened up to unwarranted searches (of our homes, cars and persons) and the patriot act was sighted as giving them the ability which it did… ppl don't understand the "patriot Act" and Patriot act 2 where two of the worst things we ever let happen to our great country those two laws in essence took the constitution and bill of rights and burnt them tore them up and wiped bushes @ss with them if you ppl would actually read these two laws in there entirety they take away soooo many freedoms from the ppl and give so many powers to the gov that our founding fathers specifically did NOT want the gov. to have....and to those of you that say oooo wah wah wah you have to give up some freedoms to fight the terrorist i say this

Ye who will give up freedoms in the name of security deserve neither security nor freedom run back to your masters and cowl for you are NOT Americans.

and also pull your head out of your @ss the gov. has created such a society of fear you wouldn't know a terrorist if he jumped up and bit you in the @ss....thats my rant for today have a good one and remember those who don't vote (or stay informed) have no right to b*tch.

PS i do storngly support our troops and our military i have several freinds and family members in the middle east and support them all its not there fault that our leadership is crap they are just doing there jobs and god bless them for that.

The war has affected me and the protesters from the uproar that they were saying about and to and against pres. Bush. But the war has changed me more better in a way to be glad to have what i have and that i and all of us are better off those people are and how sadam was treating them. But I mean think of it this way......would you or anyone else be happy or upset if you knew that our country was being overrun by muslims or jews or just people that wanted to get rid of the bed people or terrorists over here and you or me or us had it not as good as them but they did. Put yourself in their shoes & in the soldiers shoes and see what they have to go thru and need us behind them all the way. If we werent there for them, then we probably wouldnt be here right now. Some people here in teh U.S. dont know how good they have it here in the U.S. and probably never will b/c of our men and women protecting us and sacrifising themselves for us over there and those people that were under sadam's rule. But thats just me.

Decisions are at least a stand of some kind, and what we have elected officials to do. It is the indecision of government that effects us all. Time wasted on indecision like, oh say, gay marriage (which if you are not gay does not effect you at all) is what will effect us all and negatively.

Well...let's see.

I can't decide whether to be serious, or smartass. But you did ask for TRUE examples...

My nephew has served one tour of Iraq, and could be sent back at any moment.

The experience has turned him from a thoughtful, compassionate, happy young man into someone who can, and will, kill without conscience.

There's a very special place in Hell reserved for Presidents who make mistakes.

The war has effected me personally because my husband is now on his second -year long-deployment for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Gee, and I always thought my husband would be around when I was pregnant with our first child, silly me.

Two of my relatives are serving in Iraq under false pretenses. They may lose their lives for a lie. As an American, this has affected my view of our government which I once had respect for. I now see them for what they really are, warmongering control freaks.
