I think Kentucky is actually more northern; given our heritage, which is based around the Ohio River in many ways, we share a longer border with Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio than with Tennessee, and consequently more in common.

I immediately thought "Civil War" when I read the question, and I think Kentucky was with the south. :) But I'm an Indiana girl and I consider us a northern state, but definitely consider Tennessee a southern state. Kentucky to me has always seemed more southern. :)

What made the North and South? The Civil War did. Kentucky never went Confederate. It was a NORTHERN state. You can't just declare yourself part of the South when you were never part of the South.
