best time to plant watermelon is in the early spring after the last frost so they will be ripe in summer

yes watermellon is easy to grow. Plant in the early spring and try to plant it in a lighter (a bit sandy) soil and allow plenty of room for the vines to spread. The more the better. Plant seeds in hills, three or four per hill, and in an area which gets lots of sun. Monitor how much moisture is being provided until seeds have germinated and vines are well established.

If you are going to grow them at open field, do it at Spring time. Melons and water melons much faster then tomatoes, you have to water them daily in the beginning but when fruit it has a right size you have to cut back water to have a good tasty fruit. They are very attractive to pests and has low tolerance for viruses.

Make sure you take precautions to protect them from being eaten by animals. Every time we had little baby stripers beginning to grow, raccoons would bite into them at night and that was the end. My uncle claimed that covering the patch in hay would've been a good preventative.
