i have a 1996 pontiac firefly hatchback with a 1995 4 cyl swap. it was working fine up until 2 days ago and my brake lights stopped working.
my turn signals still work, and the tail lights come on with my headlights, but brake lights wont come on at all.
i've checked the bulbs and i've checked the fuses.. i've looked all around by the brake pedal to see if there was a plugin unplugged.. what else could it be?
trying to eliminate all possibilities before tracing back all the wires to see if i have a burnt one.

G.M. had a problem with the brake-light switch for a while in the early to late 90's. Most likely the switch failed.
If you have one, use a test light to see if there is power to one side of the switch. If ther is, and none on the other side, even with the pedal depressed, then it is a safe bet that the switch is gone.
You can get one at the parts house for < $25.00

The good money is on the Brake Light switch attached to the brake pedal .

Remove the 2 Wires off the switch , Bridge the 2 together with a short piece of wire , If the Brake lights come on , The Switch is either faulty or WAY OUT of correct adjustment .

But if you still have no brake lights , It's time to start back probing to find the fault

several things id tell you to look for.
there is a brake light switch that mounts on the brake pedal arm and has two or three wires attached to it.it has a plunger that is extended when you press the pedal.this is most likely the cause.bulbs can be checked by turning on the hazards:if they light, the bulbs are good.
if the vehicle has crusie control it also will not work if the brakelight switch is out.
the second and just as possible option would be the fuse.
