I have 3 koi (3-4inches) in 218 gallon preform pond using 325 gph pump filter with 9 water plants. I live in the east coast and winter is coming. I would perfer to wait at least another year for financial reason to go bigger.

Beautiful fish!!!

Koi grow pretty big, but you'll probably be ok this season leaving them in the pond they are in. Koi are unlike other fish in that they will continute to grow even if they are in a small tank. You may even be able to get away with 2 seasons in that prefab pond, its a good size with a good filter!

They need less food during the winter as their metablism slows down in the cold, so they don't grow as fast during the cooler months. BUT If you have severe weather there, you may need to provide a heater or move them indoors during the winter.

Also You might check www.google.com for local Koi Clubs that may be able to give you more specific advice.

good luck...

You may wait till next year at mid summer to change the size of the pond. They don't grow that much during winter because it's cold usually. If you live in a cold climate area I agree you get a heater for the winter. Simple It floats on the top to keep the water from freezing during the winter and lets them stay warm.
