Do you believe that the Jesus Shroud or the Turin Shroud is real? And if you do, why?

I recently was in contact with a fellow philosopher, William Lane Craig, who tells me the Shroud of Turin is considered to be genuine. I do trust what Dr. Craig states, though I still have some reservations about the shroud's authenticity, but I haven't dismissed the possibility of the historical importance it carries with it.

Is it a real shroud? Yes. Is it the shroud in which Christ was buried? Almost certainly no. Carbon 14 tests have been administered which illustrate that the date of the material and stains is not correct to the 1st century AD. A very elaborate fake, certainly, it was probably stained with some sort of tea extract.

It is a hoax. A C-14 test was done on the fabric and the results date the shroud to the middle ages.

the carbon dating only dated the patches sewn in to try to repair the shroud. No evidence the original shroud was actually dated.

Carbon dating says it's a medieval forgery, yet they have not shown one other example of such mastery in all of the middle ages and early renaissance. Furthermore, if memory serves, the nail marks are correctly placed in the wrists - which is odd for the time since most of the paintings of the time show Jesus as having nails in his hands.

So it remains a mystery.

The shroud itself is real, but was it the shroud that Jesus Christ was wrapped in when he was buried? Doubtful...

No, it's been scientifically proven to be a forgery quite a few times. There was quite a market for religious "relics" in the Middle Ages, when it is thought to have been created.
