You essentially are being paid as a "independent contractor" whether you hired on that way or not. Your employer isn't taking out your taxes, thus you are going to be held responsible for the entire amount, including the amount he is supposed to pay.
While you're not the IRS watchdog, you need to protect yourself.
I recommend you leave immediately. Drop this company from any resume and simply list the skills/responsiblity under Independent Contractor. If you have any expenses related to this job, you may be able to use those as deductions on your taxes.
I lost 1/3 of my salary at tax time. Lesson learned the hard way.

If is illegal if they do not have a tax ID number. They aren't paying taxes and are probably paying some or all of the employees under the table. The business is not documented. If you do not report this you will also be in the same amount of trouble unless you lie [which isn't recmd'd]. You should definately report this, however remember that you won't have a job. You should be able to collect unemployment since you aren't at fault. [That sucks!!]

Are they taking taxes out of your paycheck? If not, ask why? Then push them for additional explanations. Make notes as to what they say. If they use the term "IC or independent contractor" ask them about that and how that applies to your in house position.
Get the facts. Then take the action. Good luck.

If your company is tax exempt, then they won't have a tax id number. You should probably ask your HR dept about it. Your company might have a tax id, but not readily give it out. You can also look on your W-2; it would be listed as your Employer Identification Number.

Wow, is this a California Business? Businesses have to have a TIN or EIN. If they don't have either, they are not a business. These numbers are used to identify employment and business taxes.
It may be new job time.

That means they are in business illegally and probably aren't paying your taxes that they take out of your paycheck. I had a scum bag do that to me and I lost 2 years of S.S. payements that have set my retirement to age 68 no matter what I do.

Being nosy is not a valid reason for you to need to know their tax id. All EINs are treated as sensitive as SSNs.

Then they use their social security number. It doesn't seem very smart for a business person, but the IRS accepts it.

If that's true, it is an illegal company.
You, and everybody involved with it will have problems eventually.
Report it to the IRS and leave.
