OK - maybe I am crazy - but something the sonographer said this morning really concerns me.

I am 6w5d. I am a healthy 35-year-old with no pre-existing conditions or genetic issues.

I have been reading a lot about the Down's Syndrome risks of pregnancy at my age - and I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the position of the baby in the sac could be meaningful to determining if there is a chromosonal disorder.

Today I had a sonogram. The doctor ordered one to be sure of my due date and to see the heartbeat. I am pretty sure that he requested the sonogram as part of standard procedure - not because he thought something was wrong.

BUT then the sonographer made a remark the baby was "very high up there" in the sac. So, when we were looking at the picture, it was at the tippy top of the sac.

Does this have a meaning? Where the baby is in the sac?

Maybe I am being silly. I just don't want to call my doctor about this and I am not supposed to see him again until the f

I wouldn't worry about where the baby is in the sac. Right now, they are so small that they are constantly moving all over the place anyway. When I read your comment, I took it as the sonographer was just making a comment as to "where the baby is" in the sac while looking for it. Not, that there is anything to be concerned about. I have had four children with my first one when I was 31 and my last when I was 40. I have had ultrasounds and amnios with all of them except for my first one. Not one time have I ever had anyone tell me to be concerned about where the fetus is (especially...very high up there). They are more concerned if the placenta is low. If this happens, it can block the cervix. Also, if the baby is breech, this can cause a problem during delivery depending on what kind of breech it is. I have had two (my middle two) children born breech and everything is fine. Down Syndrome is strictly a chromosone issue. My OB won't even see you for your first prenatal exam until you are atleast 8 wks along. This way he can make sure that you are actually pregnant and not just late. To check for abnormalities, they wait until you are 16-18 wks so the baby is big enough to not only see, but to measure more accurately. Even at this stage, the fetus is still real small and the sonographer is constantly moving the wand around to find the fetus again for another measurement. What I thought was really cool was seeing them wiggle around and not be able to feel it yet. Also, during one of my third childs ultrasounds we actually saw her tongue touch the roof of her mouth and swallow.
Just wanted to put your mind at rest and let you know that more than likely everything will all work out. I want to congratulate you and wish you the best of luck for a smooth pregnancy and easy delivery. The first time you set eyes on your child is magical, no matter how many you have! Once again, Congratulations!

I never heard anything about position of the baby having anything to do with genetic disorders. I did hear something about being able to to see signs of downs syndrome by the hands or feet, but you are too early to tell from that. I am 34 and due a few days before my 35th birthday. I was just paranoid about genetic defects because of my age so I just went ahead and had the amnio. I am happy I did since it took away a lot of anxiety.

I have never heard of the positioning of the baby having any significant meaning other than when it is time to give birth. My good friend had a child with down syndrome and it was suspected by the ultrasound tech. It has to do with the structure of the hands and feet, thickness of the neck and mouth and tongue thickness. She was told right away about the possibility and she chose to have the Triple Screen blood test done to verify. She chose not to do an amnino because it is invasive and does pose some risks. Good Luck to you and please call your Dr. That's what they are there for!!

I really doubt it means anything bad, she was probably just commenting on the location of your baby. At 6 weeks the fetus is barely implanted and has plenty of room to swim around. Your doctor will let you know if anything is wrong. It is not the sonographer's job or responsiblity to do that.

Try to have some faith with your pregnancy. If you are stressed out and looking for a problem, you're liable to create one.

I wouldn't worry. A lot of sonogram technicians just like to comment on what they see to help you identify more with the life growing in your body. During my first sonogram the tech kept mentioning how the baby was scrunched up in a tiny ball. Most likely if there was any determination of a problem you will be contacted by your doctor.

The position of the baby at 6 wees means NOTHING. Don't you see them bounce around?

Also, the image you see on the sonograph is not what you think. I think the right of the screen is actually where your cervix would be, so it's turned 90 degrees.

At 19 weeks, toddler remains head up and bum down(an outstanding variety of the time). they do no longer turn till approximately 29-33 weeks to the top down place. there remains alot of room to swim however so toddler would be shifting in all places. factor to factor, an outstanding variety of wiggling.

NO QUESTION is silly if you have health concerns. PLEASE call your doctor and be assured he/she will NOT think you are being silly. The point is people on this site merely guess and do NOT speak with medical authority or knowledge. NOR, do they know you and your medical history!! So, it is important you seek answers from your doctor, NOT from people on here. Good Luck.

You are probably just carrying really high. Don't worry; if there's a problem, your OB will contact you.

Good luck and congratulations!
