by your habit of twisting it around as you stand talking or turn to hang it up. to remedy hold cord by end next to phone and dangle receiver to floor and let it spin its way out

This sounds like the old chestnut about the way water spirals down a plughole. In fact it is much more likely to be the way we manipulate the receiver. If you're right handed, you tend to pick it up with your right hand. In the course of a long conversation you might swop it to your left hand and back again before replacing it. You will probably find if you secretly watch someone doing this that the wire twists in a common direction as they do so (say, clockwise when looking from above).

Then again, it could be gremlins...

Hi, this happens when the Tangle Fairy goes out for the day from my house, where she lives, she just pops over to your home for a change. She then comes back here and gets to work again.
I must add that by being a little insane, I can understand some of the workings of some types of fairies.

Because it is made of a spiral shaped wire. That's just its nature. To prevent it, try not moving the cord around at all when you are talking on it. Or just get a cordless.

Because when you pick the phone up you move about and swap hands, then when you put it back you don't always replace it the same way you picked it up

it happens with the iron too. you just have to dangle it in the air so it spins back round!
