I know how to delete by going to the history button, but it seems like someone once told me that old deleted items can still be retrieved.

You need to go up to the tools menu and into the Internet options (this is for MS Internet Explorer, but it works much the same in Netscape and other browsers). This is the same place where you can delete the history. What you need to do is also delete the temporary files, the cookies and files that were downloaded with each page. You see, every picture, sound file, or cookie that got downloaded as part of a web page gets stored on your hard drive for a certain amount of time, based on how much memory you've allocated to storing temporary files -- assuming the content of the web page doesn't change, this makes it quicker to pull up that page in the future, because you don't have to download all those images and files again; they're already on your computer. To free up hard drive space (or to cover your tracks about where you've been on the internet), you delete these files.
