The reason is because money will buy sense gratification. This is the purpose of life for those who have no better aim in life than the hogs and dogs. The animals have sex, eat, sleep and defend themselves also. So what great achievements has this civilization accomplished if everything is used to get sex, food, shelter, and defend ourselves?
The real value of this life is the opportunity we have to become self-realized. What makes the human life distinct from the animals is that we have the ability to ask the important questions: What am I? What is this world? Why am I here? From whom or what did I come? What is the supreme?

We are happier when we know that we've contributed something to society. We are all cooperative beings, no matter how much we hide behind money. That's why you got so many answers mentioning volunteer work.

It's the "American Dream". Personally I value my family way above money. Money is the thing that puts food on the table, as long as my family is healthy, safe, and happy I'm happy.

life is valued more than money,,, to many people.
its hard to discern the two sometimes,,,, due to the fact they go hand in hand in the structure of society and economy, etc.....
precious metals,,,, is where it all began.... simple structure really,,, of worth and want/need.
and we work to better ourselves thru this structure.... its easy to want to do so,,,, who wants to live life uncomfortably?
so yes,,, we do parallel work with fulfillment,,, not to many other ways to gain a comfortable life...in todays society,,, is there?

Because work IS life. Money is just a medium of exchange. It is our work that gains us the necessities of life thru the medium of monetary exchange. If you exclude money is is called barter.

I blame the calvinists that equated material success with membership in the "elect".
Sadly, that idea has once again come back...
