Can someone help?

The stuff in parenthesis are the choices you have for answers....the correct answer is 3/8

To further explain:

Since one side of your math problem is in fourths (7/4) and the other side is in eighths (17/8)...it is easier to work this problem if both sides are in eighths....

take 7/4 and mutiply it by 2/2 so you can now make it 14/8

then you know that "x" is going to be "something over 8"

Using the top numbers 3 + 14 = 17.....
You already know the bottom number is 8....
So your answer has to be 3/8

The french brackets or braces { } are typically used to identify a set of numbers:

{a,b,c} means the set consisting of a, b, and c.

The semicolon ; is typically used to indicate "given".

So, in English, you should read it like this:

Solve for x in the equation x+7/4=17/8 given the set of numbers 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8.

The answer being, of course, 3/8. But your questions was really about the symbolism, I'm sure. You might want to bookmark the following website, if you have any other questions about math symbolism:

the answer is x = 3/8
solution is simple
7/4 = 14/8
therefore 14/8 + 3/8 = 17/8
;{ } = answers to chose from and the commas seperate them.

they are probably answer choices.

x + 7/4 = 17/8
x = 17/8 - 7/4
x = 17/8 - 7/4 * 2/2
x = 17/8 - 14/8
x = 3/8
