A couple of weeks ago I posted a question about sales of branded materials related to a specific college team. Many felt that a team with a national following like Notre Dame would sell the most, but others suggested that this may vary depending on whether a team is winning or not.
Does the same logic apply to NFL teams? I know the Cowboys used to sell far more memorabilia than any other team during the "America's Team" era, but will they sell the most this year? All things considered, what 5 NFL teams would you predict to sell the most team-related products (memorabilia, souvenirs, toys, clothing, etc...) during the next 12 months? Hard statistics would be appreciated if available.
Thanks

Thanks for the great answers. Since a few of you mentioned Oakland even though they were beaten badly by the Chargers last Monday, I guess the outlook for the current season doesn't play into this that much?
I wondered if the amount of gear from each team on eBay gives any indication so I ran a breakdown of the category tree under Fan Apparel & Souvenirs / Football-NFL (using AuctionMapper) and here is what it said:
Steelers 7769 items
Cowboys 3826
Packers 3739
Eagles 2990
Patriots 2982
Raiders 2961
Bears 2875
The Redskins had 1828 items. Of course, number of items for sale might not indicate number of items that will be bought.
Thanks again for your insight.

Steelers / Cowboys seem to be almost unanimous choices and also have the most gear selling on eBay. Only question now is who is 3, 4, and 5 and why.

A lot of it is based on team popularity, look at how much each team is worth, and it is an indirect correlation.
The redskins, according to Forbes.com are worth 1.264 billion dollars and actual revenues totalling $287 million.
Worth in football is related to how much revenue your team makes, which is based on how much your teams "Brand" or Image will sell.
Because of this, my top five teams this year are based Partly off of teams worth, including Score results in the past, which has been a factor in team sales [note the steep decline or the Raiders as of late.]
#1: Redskins. Because they are far more valuable than any other NFL franchise, it is safe to say they sell a lot of merchandise. Their sales will go downhill if they continue to suffer injuries and lose games.
#2: New Orleans Saints. While they rank 22nd, according to Forbes, in franchise value, the addition of Reggie Bush has sparked the imagination of every Saints fan, and Fans of most teams around the NFL. Expect his Jersey to sell more than any other this season.
#3: Cowboys. Terrell Owens coming is huge, thousands, if not millions of his jerseys will be sold. However, does the Tuna have what it takes to make a top team out of Americas Team? Doubtful.
#4: Patriots/Colts. New England is on the high end of franchise value, appearing at #3 [worth 1.04billion] and the Colts are #24, at 715 million. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are probably the NFLs two most marketable Quarterbacks, and historically, Jerseys are sold generally of the highest paid players, or most visible. Which is usually Quarterbacks.
#5: Steelers. Super Bowl Champs, they are. This will boost popularity of their products and merchandise significantly, if they continue to do well throughout the season.

They would lose any respect that they have established over the last 100+ years and they would not be able to allow any children under 17 to attend the games. Not to mention, most women would no longer attend, nor would most married men. The NFL would most likely lose all of it's contracts with the top television broadcasters and would be restricted to airing games on the playboy channel. As a result the NFL would lose nearly all of it's income and would most likely fold in less than 5 years. On top of all that... the viewers that actually got a kick out of your halftime show, would be reduced to watching trashy, overweight girls who weren't attractive enough to make it in the porn/stripper industry. No self-respecting NFL cheerleader would take part in that.

Steelers - cuz they won and everyone loves to ride on the bandwagon
Patriots - cuz people dont like to get off of the bandwagon
Cowboys - "America's Team" always popular + T.O. hype
These top 3 will be consistent in most peoples answers. The next will probabally differ greatly, esp. by region. But overall my guesses are:
Raiders - black and silver, goes well with anything
and lastly....
Da Bears - classic, simple, Ditka. nuf said
