It does more than one thing. As you know, the drive shaft can't turn the rear axle without the diff. changing the direction of the spin.

Second, as you turn a corner, the drive wheels are spinning at different speeds. The diff., allows this to happen without the tire wear that would occur if you had a solid axle spinning both wheels at the same speed.

Third, the gears in a diff. can be changed to give faster acceleration, or better gas mileage, as desired.

The differential is the final drive component in the drive line. Meaning the engine makes the power the transmission sends the power and the rear end takes the power and converts into movement of the vehicle.

when you go around a corner 1 wheel has to travel farther than the other without the differential the wheel with the least wait would be forced to slip. On a front wheel drive car it would also make it harder to steer.
