I mean the ones involved with American Independence not the modern day ones who patrol the borders.

Dime-store cowboys who never got to be sheriff, out running around with guns, pretending to be sheriff. Nothing greater, nothing lesser. At least it keeps them off the couch.
EDIT: I see you've clarified your question, so I'll clarify mine. They were Freedom Fighters to the American colonists, but obviously terrorists to the British for attacking naval vessels and fighting Redcoats. It's all from whose perspective you're looking from....and history is the final judge who is deemed what.

Thw reason for such is the minutemen of old never stooped to slaughtering of non combatants.. taking hostages and execiuting prisoners nor torture.. times were different back then... the opposong parties had almost a gentleman's agreement.. prisoners would be traded and most of them would observe the pact that they would fight no longer in the war,
It is hard to compare it to modern times since society has changed so much over the past 200+ years though
