The fuel indicator works fine until the level is around 1/4 tank, then it "sticks", so I don't get any readings below 1/4 tank. At that point, I usually hit the gas station and fill up. It's no big deal, but it would be nice if there were a way to fix this without removing the gas tank. Is there? Thanks in advance!

In an 87 there maybe some sediment built up in the bottom of the tank. And perhaps the float for the sending unit is resting on that thus not going any lower. You can and should just fill up at 1/4 tank to keep your pump from sucking up the sediment that's causing the problem or wait until your fuel pump fails and then when you're taking it out you'll be able to clean the tank and your problem will be solved.

You can empty the tank, disconnect the lines, drop the tank by removing the straps, pull the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit (it's probably all one unit) and replace it. Or you can stop and fill when you hit a quarter tank. If yours has the mechanical pump, the sending unit is still in the tank. Sorry.

The sending units in the gas tank so not much chance of repairing it without pulling the tank!

I think the tanks got to come out,you could try another sender unit connect to the wire that normally goes to the tank and work it manually before fitting just to make sure that it is a crook sender unit.
