Follow the steps to check if its genuine. If not, it will ask you to download a tool then you can insert your genuine key.

go to www.microsoft.com Try the program update option. They will tell you that your version is not genuine and offer you the option to pay for it and make it genuine.

you have to activate and register with the microsoft , only when the key you have is a real one, yours xp will be genuine ... else it is considered as the pirated one ....
