I have thie older computer, it used to run very slow. It had a 10G hard drive, 256 MB ram, not sure about the processor. Anyway, I upgraded the hard drive to a 120G, put a CD-RW and DVD-ROM drive in, and also put several other new things in. Also added Windows XP, it had 2000. It took almost 2 days to install windows, and right now, it takes sooo long to do anything. Whats the deal?

Well the speed depends very much on the PROCESSOR. So you should upgrade that as well. There also might be some compatibility problems with the hard drive and the mainboard.

Basically, you shot yourself in the foot. Sorry, but it's the truth. An older machine with only 256 MB of RAM is not going to run faster with Windows XP or the extra drivers needed to communicate with all those "other new things".

Seriously. It's like saying, "I'm going to upgrade my Volkswagen! I'm going to add a trailer hitch and trailer to carry stuff, and a roof cargo carrier, and a big honkin stereo system that pulls about two hundred amps of current when I turn it up... oh, and the speakers weigh about 150 pounds!"

If you have an older computer, and don't want to upgrade to a newer one, the easiest way to increase its speed is to increase the amount of RAM, probably to as much as it will handle. But even that won't overcome certain other issues, like a majorly slow processor, or a narrow BUS. Even your video card can impact things. Games and other software place big demands on the computer to create images, and if you have an older video card with minimal memory, the screen response will be slow no matter how fast data is being handled.

Add to that the fact that every new gizmo you add on (scanner, DVD-ROM, CD burner, camera, etc.) requires a driver or program to allow it to communicate with the processor. All these programs have to run in memory. If you have minimal memory, pretty soon your computer's memory is full of all these drivers and other programs in the background, and there's no room for your game or whatever.

You did not mention the processor speed. but you said that it take2 days to install the XP.

1. Check the that you installed new component properly. The best thing is remove all new components from your PC & attach one device at a time & load OS and check the performance. There may be Problem with your new device.

2. You attach new 120GB HDD. Go to Bios & check whether that it show near 120GB capacity or showing low value. Some Old mother boards are not supporting high capacity HDD & it can slow your booting speed.

3.Check whether your PC enabled the DMA (Direct Memory Access) settings. If your pc not enabled this settings it will reduce atleast 90% data access speed.

You don't have enough ram. Also with a 10 gig hard drive you probably don't have a pentium 4. You need to upgrade your processor and add at least 256 more ram.

You might have too many files and downloads on your computer. Songs take up alot of memory if you have alot. Try erases some things also if you have programs you have installed. Go to Start -----> Settings ------> Control Panel ------> Add/Remove Programs and remove programs you don't need. My computer is alot faster when I erase a few stuff. Good Luck. :)
