While I've been surfing around here recently, I've noticed that when a kid asks for help some answerer's feel the need to tell them that they should figure it out for themselves or learn better time management or some such bunk. I mean the topic here is "Homework Help", right?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but, I thought the whole Internet thing was supposed to be a way for everyone to seek info and exchange ideas.
If you feel the need to blast someone, why not go to "Politics and Government" or "Religion and Spirituality" there are tons of nut cases there who you can verbally abuse.

This could be a great resource for students, but they won't use it if they always get flack. If you don't know the answer, can't you just leave the kid alone?

Yes some answerers are loose cannons, however, a lot of the askers are just looking for specific answers. That is, they want some one here to do the work for them. I very rarely see a question that is asking for help with the methods. For example in math:

"I am having trouble understanding how to add fractions, can any one explain the process to me? Can you also give examples please?"

As opposed to:

"I need an answer?
1/4+1/7-5/6"

The first question is asking about the concept, and I readily answer those. With the second question I provide an alternative problem and supply a complete answer, then tell the asker to do their own work.

Just giving the answer to the second type of question does not help the student. If people stopped giving this type of help we would soon see better questions and thus less "giving a hard time." After all this is "HOMEWORK HELP" not "DO MY HOMEWORK FOR ME!"

Worse, they get 2 points for abusing the poor person.

I definitely agree. I usually stop answering someone's questions if they post a LOT of questions in a row, and it becomes clear they're trying to get their homework done for them, rather than just asking for help on the ones they don't know, or for explanations that will help them do the rest of their homework. Sometimes I'll leave them a comment to that effect.

But I never abuse them or belittle them, and I really wish people would stop it - one can't accurately judge someone solely based on a couple of questions posted.

Excellent point. While it is fun to blast the nuts in Politics etc, I am finding it more fun to help the people here who really seem to want to find out something.

I feel many students use this to get the answers instead of trying to work the issue out or understanding it.
