I had to do this when I was in college. Wouldn't it look better for you if you picked a stock for reasons of your own? Think of something you use everyday. Who makes it? Look up that company. Then you'll have a personal connection to it and it will mean more to you as you follow it and watch it grow (or decline). I did Bausch & Lomb (sp?) I wear contact lenses. Then I found out they were the makers of a water pic. Go figure! What brand of toothpaste do you use? Do you shop Old Navy, etc.

This will be the season for shopping, How about stocks that may benefit from the holiday gift shopping. Start looking at BBY, WMT, TGT, CC. These will only be a short time gains if the season is bad.

If your grade is based on it, stick with established, big companies that could benefit from the upcoming holidays.
If not, go with "penny stocks" (stocks under $5 but above, say $1)

Good luck!

I used to do this with my students at Wharton to teach them about risk and portfolio theory.

If your goal is to win, then you should invest everything in really risky securities. That way, you are likely to do really well or really poorly.

If your goal is to match the market -- pick 30 stocks at random.
